“Crazy Army” was written at Christmas time in either 1933 or 1934 by Ed Lemley. As the story goes, Ed’s son, Ken Lemley, was listening to a radio station from Ireland in the early morning hours and Ed got some ideas for drum parts to the music. Ed wasn’t sure he would remember what he had come up with so he taught Ken the part before going to bed. It was not well received at the time, being considered too syncopated. Today it is used to accompany many various fife tunes and is a very popular stand alone rudimental snare solo.
