A collection of eight original rudimental solos and five rudimental classics.

I am very excited to bring you this collection of snare drum solos for drummers at an advanced level. The first eight solos represent an advanced knowledge and mastery of the Percussive Arts Society’s 40 International Drum Rudiments and a select few of the ever-emerging hybrid rudiments. The final five selections, “The Three Camps,” “Downfall of Paris,” “Rosebud Reel,” “Connecticut Halftime,” and “Hell on the Wabash,” are traditional snare drum solos dating back to the Civil War, and possibly before. They have been handed down from generation to generation and are still excellent solos for any rudimental repertoire. It is my hope that this collection of solos will challenge and inspire a new generation of rudimental drummers.

The selection of 33 quicksteps (marches) and other drum beatings compiled for this printing, taken from The Drummer’s and Fifer’s Guide by George Bruce and Daniel Emmett and published in 1862, are presented as examples of the rudimental stylings of the late 1800’s, post-Civil War. Certain rudimental patterns are found frequently in these selections, as was common for the time. Certain notations and interpretations have been updated to better reflect modern notation. It is not my intention to present an exact interpretation of Civil War-era drumming. Nor should the selections I’ve included be considered for Civil War re-enactments. It is my hope, however, that drummers, particularly young drummers, will glimpse the origins of our rudimental history and gain a general feel for the style of drumming of the late 1800’s.
